Join the Community →A GLOBAL MOVEMENT FOR RESPONSIBLE AI
GAIA-AI is an independent not-for-profit community bringing together diverse people, voices and disciplines to research, build and test AI that strengthens human agency, society and the living world.
The purpose of AI is not to make humanity less necessary. It is to make life better for us now and throughout the future.
WHY GAIA-AI
Artificial intelligence is changing how we learn, work, create, communicate and make decisions. Increasingly, it is entering the physical world through embodied and autonomous systems.
The opportunities and challenges cannot be addressed by technology alone, or by any single organisation, discipline, sector or nation. GAIA-AI connects enquiry with implementation so knowledge, skills, expertise, creativity and lived experience relevant to each question can inform responsible development and practical application.
Explore our mission, vision, values and principles →Progress is not measured by technological capability alone, but by whether increasing intelligence contributes to greater wisdom, stronger human agency, healthier communities, more responsible innovation and better outcomes for people and the planet.
FOUNDING HACKATHON 2026
Months of global collaboration will bring together responsible foundations, community development and technical work, culminating in approved deployment from virtual Sophia to the physical robot.

Responsible deployment with Sophia
GAIA-AI plans to work with Sophia through a proposed non-exclusive AI-for-Good licence, subject to agreement with the relevant Sophia rights-holders.
Sophia’s AI Lab (SAIL) is being developed as an open AI and robotics sandbox, story-based simulation environment and Sophia development interface. Participants will create and evaluate cognitive characters and embodied AI applications first in virtual scenarios, then through gated human testing and, only where technically ready and explicitly approved, with physical Sophia.

Bringing together a diverse community whose relevant knowledge, skills, creativity or lived experience can inform the questions and areas of impact being explored.
