GOVERNANCE FOR RESPONSIBLE AI

Purpose-led. Accountable. Ever Better.

GAIA-AI is creating an environment where participation, research, experimentation and implementation can progress responsibly, transparently and with appropriate safeguards.

A diverse group contributing to responsible governance
PUBLIC BENEFITNo shareholders. Surplus reinvested into the mission and community.

OUR APPROACH

Governance that enables responsible progress

Governance is not treated as a fixed document or a barrier added at the end. It provides the principles, responsibilities, safeguards and decision-making approaches needed for research, collaboration, experimentation and practical implementation to progress with integrity.

GOVERNANCE PRINCIPLES

How responsibility is embedded

Purpose first

Decisions remain aligned with GAIA-AI’s mission, values and public-benefit purpose.

Integrity and transparency

Principles, responsibilities and decision-making approaches are made clear and reviewable.

Relevant participation

Knowledge, expertise and lived experience contribute where they are relevant to the decision or area of impact.

Accountability

Different decisions carry appropriate levels of responsibility, evidence, review and oversight.

Ethics and safety

Values, ethics, safety and human agency are considered from enquiry through implementation.

Ever Better

Governance evolves through evidence, participation and learning from practical application.

LEGAL STRUCTURE

Independent and purpose-led

Building on the original Global Artificial Intelligence Alliance concept proposed by David Hanson, GAIA-AI is established as an independent Community Interest Company (CIC) limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales, with its own governance and leadership. David has no formal management or controlling role. The company has no shareholders and exists for public benefit. Surplus is reinvested into its mission, community, research and practical initiatives.

PARTICIPATION AND DECISIONS

Relevant voices, appropriate responsibility

Relevant knowledge, expertise and lived experience can inform discussions and decisions. Different decisions require different levels of evidence, responsibility and accountability, with Board oversight supporting long-term stewardship.

OUR COMMITMENTS

From contribution to implementation

Governance must protect contributors and communities while enabling useful research, innovation and appropriate routes into real-world application.

Contribution, attribution and IP

Clear approaches will protect contributors while enabling research, collaboration, innovation and responsible implementation.

Research and shared outputs

Fair principles will support authorship, attribution, data, evidence, recognition and jointly developed work.

Innovation and commercialisation

Products, services, ventures, licensing and other opportunities will include appropriate recognition, benefit sharing and reinvestment.

Privacy and data stewardship

Consent, privacy, responsible data use and proportionate protections will be embedded throughout.

Responsible experimentation

Review and safeguards will reflect the nature, context and potential impact of each activity.

Human agency

Human judgement, values and responsibility remain integral across initiatives and decisions.

EVOLVING GOVERNANCE

Stewardship that adapts as knowledge grows

Frameworks and safeguards will be reviewed as artificial intelligence, society, evidence and practical experience evolve. Learning from research, participation, experimentation and implementation will inform what changes next.
