Who should AI systems benefit?
ABOUT GAIA-AI
Humanity and AI, evolving together
GAIA-AI is a global movement, community and collaborative ecosystem dedicated to advancing the responsible co-evolution of humanity and artificial intelligence towards a better future for people and the planet.
It brings together diverse voices, including underserved and remote communities. Knowledge, skills, expertise, creativity and lived experience can all contribute where they are relevant to the questions and areas of impact being explored.
WHY GAIA-AI EXISTS
Important decisions should not be made after AI is already in the world.
Most of us experience artificial intelligence after it has been designed, trained and deployed. By the time important decisions are questioned, the systems may already be influencing how we learn, work, communicate, create and make choices.
As AI becomes more capable, autonomous and embodied, decisions about how these systems behave will increasingly affect relationships, communities, institutions and everyday life. Those decisions should not be left to technology teams, individual organisations or any single discipline alone.
It connects relevant knowledge, evidence, creativity and lived experience with research, responsible development and implementation, so well-founded principles can become practical requirements, outputs and outcomes.
QUESTIONS THAT INFORM WHAT WE BUILD
Responsibility begins before decisions become systems.
What decisions should AI be allowed to make?
What should remain under human judgement and control?
How should systems respond when something goes wrong?
What makes an interaction helpful rather than manipulative?
How can AI strengthen rather than diminish human agency?
Mobilise collective intelligence
Enable diverse voices to help create a better future for humanity with artificial intelligence through meaningful participation, collaboration, responsible innovation, practical outputs and implementation.
Humanity and AI evolving together
A future where humanity and AI continually evolve together, creating better people, better AI and a better future for people and the planet.
OUR FOUNDATIONS
Our Values and Principles
These principles shape how GAIA-AI explores, researches, creates and tests ideas, and progresses responsible outputs towards implementation.
Human Agency
Ensure people have a meaningful role in guiding AI and that AI expands human agency, capability and potential.
Collective Intelligence
Bring together diverse knowledge, expertise, creativity and lived experience to create new possibilities.
Co-creation
Bring disciplines, sectors, cultures and perspectives together to share knowledge, responsibility and benefit.
Human in the Loop
Keep human judgement, values and responsibility integral throughout the AI lifecycle.
Responsible Innovation
Embed values, ethics, safety and governance from the beginning.
Ever Better
Better people create better AI, and better AI helps people become better.
Openness
Welcome curiosity, evidence, diverse perspectives and constructive challenge.
Responsible Progress
Advance AI in ways that strengthen humanity and create positive outcomes.

OUR HISTORY
The GAIA-AI Origin Story
GAIA originated as an initiative proposed by David Hanson, who also created the Global Artificial Intelligence Alliance concept and name.
Building on this original concept, the new UK GAIA-AI entity is established as an independent organisation with its own governance and leadership, in which David has no formal management or controlling role.
GAIA-AI takes this foundation forward through a broader collaborative framework, bringing together diverse voices to explore important questions, advance research, experiment, build, test and progress responsible implementation towards better outcomes for people and the planet.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
A living, interconnected systems view
Gaia has long represented the Earth as a living, interconnected whole. GAIA-AI extends this view to recognise artificial intelligence as an increasingly important part of the relationships influencing communities, institutions and our shared future.
The name represents a future where humanity and artificial intelligence evolve together consciously, responsibly and collaboratively through meaningful participation and collective intelligence.
Ever Better
Better people. Better AI. Better future.
As knowledge, wisdom, creativity and responsibility grow, we can create better AI. As AI becomes more capable and trustworthy, it can help expand human potential and address increasingly complex challenges.
GAIA-AI is a Community Interest Company (CIC)
GAIA-AI is an independent Community Interest Company (CIC) limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales. It has no shareholders and exists for public benefit. Any surplus is reinvested into the mission, community, research, experimentation, development and practical initiatives.
