Build and evaluate in simulation
Create cognitive characters and embodied AI applications within story-based virtual scenarios before any human or physical testing.

Sophia’s AI Lab (SAIL) is being developed as an open AI and robotics sandbox, story-based simulation environment and Sophia development interface.
Participants will create and evaluate cognitive characters and embodied AI applications first in virtual scenarios, then through gated human testing and, only where technically ready and explicitly approved, with physical Sophia.
GAIA-AI plans to work with Sophia through a proposed non-exclusive AI-for-Good licence, subject to agreement with the relevant Sophia rights-holders.
Physical Sophia is a planned, gated stage of the SAIL pathway. Work will begin virtually and move through human testing before any physical use, which will occur only where technically ready and explicitly approved.
Create cognitive characters and embodied AI applications within story-based virtual scenarios before any human or physical testing.
Suitable work may progress through gated human testing after the required technical, ethical, safety and responsible-development review.
Physical Sophia will be considered only where work is technically ready, the necessary access arrangements are complete and explicit approval is given.

SAIL is being developed as an AI and robotics sandbox, story-based simulation environment and Sophia development interface.
SAIL COMPONENTS
Each component will support a distinct part of the journey from enquiry and experimentation to tested outputs and implementation.
A development interface for creating and evaluating work with virtual Sophia.
Virtual scenarios for exploring cognitive characters, embodied AI applications and real-world questions.
Tools for research, education and responsible evaluation in virtual environments.
Gated human testing, technical review, ethics, safety and explicit approval requirements.
Progression to physical Sophia only where technically ready and explicitly approved.
HOW SAIL WILL WORK
Every project will begin virtually. Evidence, human judgement, ethics, safety, access arrangements and explicit approval will determine whether and how work progresses.
Explore questions, scenarios and needs, and shape ideas with a clear purpose.
Create applications, agents, behaviours and experiences using shared development tools.
Create and evaluate cognitive characters and embodied AI applications first in virtual scenarios.
Assess evidence against agreed technical, human-testing, ethical, safety and responsible-development requirements.
Progress suitable work through gated human testing only after the required review and safeguards are complete.
Move work to physical Sophia only where technically ready, access arrangements are complete and explicit approval is given.
Use evidence and outcomes to refine the work and inform what comes next.
WHAT SAIL WILL ENABLE
SAIL is being developed to bring together artificial intelligence, robotics, storytelling, education and research within a controlled virtual-to-physical pathway.
Connect relevant knowledge, skills, research, creativity or lived experience with responsible development.
